Why Rabbit Manure is the Best Fertilizer You Are Not Using

If you have ever asked a gardener what the best fertilizer is, you have probably heard all kinds of answers. Cow manure, chicken manure, horse manure. But there is one that most people never think about, and it might just be the best one of all. Rabbit manure.

Here at Tournesol Farm, our bunnies are some of our hardest workers. They are sweet, they are quiet, and they make some of the richest fertilizer you can find. Here is why we love it and why your garden will too.

Most animal manures need to be composted before you use them in the garden. If you put fresh chicken or cow manure on your plants, it can burn the roots because it is too strong. You have to wait weeks or even months for it to break down.

Rabbit manure is different. It is what gardeners call a “cold” manure. That means you can use it fresh, right from the hutch, straight into the garden. No composting needed. No waiting around. Just scoop it and spread it.

Rabbit manure is packed with the three things plants need most. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Gardeners call these the “big three” and they are what you see on fertilizer bags as the N P K numbers.

Compared to other manures, rabbit droppings have about four times more nutrients than cow or horse manure. They also have twice as much as chicken manure. Plus they are dry and easy to handle. No smell, no mess. Just little round pellets that break down slowly and feed your soil over time.

Straight in the garden. Sprinkle the pellets around the base of your plants or work them into the soil before planting. They will break down slowly and release nutrients right where your plants need them.

Bunny tea. This is one of our favorites. Put a handful of rabbit droppings in a bucket of water and let it sit for a day or two. Then use that water to feed your plants. It is like a vitamin drink for your garden. Your tomatoes and peppers will go crazy for it.

In the compost. If you already have a compost pile, rabbit manure is a wonderful addition. It speeds up the composting process and adds extra nutrients to the finished product.

For seedlings and potting soil. Mix a little rabbit manure into your potting mix when starting seeds or repotting plants. It gives them a gentle boost without being too strong for tender young roots.

One thing we have noticed over the years is that rabbit manure does not just feed your plants. It actually improves the soil itself. It helps sandy soil hold more water and it loosens up heavy clay. Earthworms love it too. If you start using rabbit manure, you will notice more worms in your garden, and that is always a good sign.

If you have ever dealt with chicken or cow manure, you know it can be pretty rough. The smell alone can clear a room. Rabbit manure is nothing like that. The pellets are small, dry, and almost odorless. You can store them in a bag or bucket without any problem. Your neighbors will never complain.

Our bunnies have been helping us grow healthier vegetables and stronger flowers for years. If you want to give your garden a natural boost without any chemicals or complicated composting, rabbit manure is the way to go. It is simple, it is safe, and it works.
